2025 Past President's Webinar - From Curiosity to Science: Bridging Practice and Research in Family Medicine
December 11, 2025 | 6:00 AM CT

Featuring Dr. Tim olde Hartman
The webinar explores how everyday clinical curiosity and uncertainties can serve as catalysts for scientific inquiry in family medicine. Dr. Tim olde Hartman reflects on how his work with patients experiencing persistent somatic symptoms, depressive symptomatology, placebo and nocebo effects, and person-centered care has shaped his research agenda. He illustrates how general practitioners can transform observations from daily practice into questions that advance understanding and improve care. The presentation connects themes of communication, and therapeutic relationships to the scientific study of patient outcomes, highlighting a continuous cycle between practice and research — from curiosity to exploration to action, and back again.

Research paradigms underpin every study, shaping the ethical practices and methodologies & methods chosen. In this second session in a series, Patty Thille and Martina Kelly introduce common paradigms in primary care research that align with different qualitative methodologies. We will highlight the kinds of research questions that each seeks to address, and work through examples of how paradigm choice shapes methodological decisions.
