The first in a series, Thinking Qualitatively is a prequel to the usual discussion of qualitative methods and strategies to enhance quality. While qualitative research covers a broad terrain of traditions, Martina Kelly and Patty Thille introduce fundamental concepts to qualitative research: reflexivity; context-specificity; the focus on the particular; and iteration. These fundamental concepts shape the mindset and practices of a range of qualitative traditions.

AI in Primary Care Webinar

We hosted an insightful session where three expert panelists each delivered a 10-minute presentation on one key challenge and one key benefit of AI in primary care.

The expert panelists explored the educational dimensions of AI, examining how it has been transforming the learning experiences of medical trainees and empowering patients. They also discussed the governance challenges involved in integrating AI into primary care, while highlighting a key benefit amid these complexities. Finally, the panel addressed the importance of assessing real-world impact and continuously monitoring AI systems to ensure their effectiveness and safety.

The session concluded with a 30-minute interactive Q&A, allowing attendees to engage directly with the panelists.

Strategic Advocacy for Primary Care Research: From Policy to Action

Attendees gained insights into the advocacy priorities outlined in the National Family Medicine Strategic Plan, examined the current landscape of U.S. primary care research policy, and explored practical, actionable steps to support and strengthen advocacy efforts.

The discussion highlighted how individuals across the research and clinical spectrum can contribute to shaping policy and advancing the future of primary care research—reinforcing the power of collective action in driving meaningful change.

About the Webinar:

Pragmatic trials aim to conduct experimental trials in conditions that resemble real-world situations so that their results might better apply to real-world practice.  This webinar will address the rationale for pragmatic trials and describe design of a pragmatic trial. We will also show how degree of pragmatism can be measured and reported for these trials.  The webinar will use examples from an ongoing pragmatic trial of the COACH app for hypertension control. We will highlight resources that can help investigators use this method.

Objectives:

1. Describe pragmatic trial design and rationale and measures of pragmatism in trials
2. Discuss design decisions made in a pragmatic trial and illustrate using the pragmatic trial of the COACH EHR tool for hypertension
3. Elucidate resources for help in designing pragmatic trials.
