Astrud Villareal, MD, DIMPH; Colleen Del Valle; Hnia Usman; Tyler Evans, DO
Abstract
Context: Due to COVID, didactics teaching for resident learners shifted to a fully virtual platform. With this switch, it was important to continue maintaining a learning environment that balanced building critical thinking and problem solving skills with an engaging virtual format. Introducing a team based learning model into didactics provides residents with a change in virtual learning that still provides beneficial and crucial teaching. Objective: To determine whether a virtual team-based learning platform can provide an engaging yet educational over the traditional didactic presentation delivery. Study Design: Survey based data collection and analysis. Setting: Family medicine residency program. Population studied: Family medicine residents (N=42). Intervention/Instrument: Twice monthly virtual team based learning activities during resident didactics. Main and Secondary Outcome Measures (if any): Number or percentage of residents that that view team based learning as equal to or prefers team based learning over traditional lecture delivery. Anticipated Results: At the end of the survey period, we anticipate that the residents will show that team based learning is equal to or even preferred over traditional lecture based presentation delivery. Conclusions: Virtual team based learning provide an engaging environment for learners especially given extended use of the virtual platform due to COVID-19
