SRFP050: Gambling-Related Completed Suicides: A Scoping Review

Mariya Andreeva; Sophie Audette-Chapdelaine, MA, BCL, LLB; Magaly Brodeur, MD, PhD

Abstract

Context: In the literature, gambling disorder has been established as a risk factor for suicide. For instance, in Sweden, individuals with gambling disorder have a 15-fold increase in suicide mortality compared to the general population. While some studies have explored the link between gambling and suicidality, few have specifically investigated the role gambling played in completed suicides. Therefore, recognizing and understanding the increased suicide risk in patients with gambling disorder will allow primary care professionals to provide better-adapted care to this population. Objective: To explore the available peer-reviewed literature on completed suicides related to gambling. Study design: Scoping review following the framework established by Arksey and O’Malley (2005) and further refined by Levac et al. (2010). Dataset: Academic search complete, CINAHL +, APA Psyc Articles, APA Psyc Extra, Psychology and Behavioral Sciences Collection, Psyc Info, SOC Index and SCOPUS were searched. We used the keywords suicide, gambling, gambler* and betting, and the subject indexing system of each database for the research. Results: The search yielded a total of 1108 articles, of which 613 remained after the removal of duplicates. Upon title and abstract review, 52 articles fit the criterion of having both gambling and completed suicides as their main subject. Final selection and analysis are still underway. Conclusions: This scoping review will provide an overview of the research currently available regarding the link between gambling and completed suicides, allowing to better guide primary care efforts for patients with gambling disorder. It will also reveal gaps in the literature and highlight further avenues of research on this important subject.

Great poster on an interesting research question. Does the contact for the question come from suicide prevention or gambling disorder? Did this literature tell us anything about the role of primary care in detecting, or managing gambling disorder or preventing suicide? Thanks for bringing your work to NAPCRG.

Interesting work! I actually did my masters thesis on gambling addiction many years ago and presented it at NAPCRG. Living in Nevada, this is an issue I see but it gets little recognition in the primary care literature. Please keep working on this and reach out!
