SRFP115: Understanding the role of health professions in health systems transformation

Ashley Chisholm, MSc

Abstract

The need for health systems transformation is a health policy priority in Canada. Healthcare spending is growing at an unsustainable rate, and systems ranks poorly in areas such as access to care, equity in care, and health outcomes. Policy makers are calling on health professionals to be accountable to health systems transformation, however, it is unknown whether their education prepares them for this call. This proposed study aims to understand the current state of the literature on health systems transformation within the context of health professions education in Canada. The research questions are as follows: (1) what is the current state of the literature on health systems transformation in health professions education? and (2) what areas are important to consider for future curricula development and programs of research on health systems transformation in health professions education? To address these research questions, I will conduct a scoping review that includes an extensive stakeholder consultation component. The study will include two phases. In Phase 1, I will conduct a literature synthesis. In Phase 2, I will complete a mixed-methods stakeholder consultation to enhance and validate the findings of my literature synthesis as well as identify stakeholders’ concerns on the topic. In this consultation, I will also delineate the gaps in the existing literature and develop recommendations for future curricula development and research programs on health systems transformation in health professions education. Overall, this study aims to generate a deep understanding of the current state of knowledge of health systems transformation in health professions education and how we can prepare health professionals (at all levels) for health systems transformation. Such knowledge will provide direction to stakeholders on the resources and activities needed to ensure that health professions education makes informed health systems transformation training decisions.

Important topic. I'm wondering, given the talk on racism in research on Saturday, whether the milieu and research literature on system transformation in Canada would also benefit from searching not only PUBMED but other sources of literature and expanded paradigms of disruptive transformation, power differentials, and community organizing to apply to this topic!
