Abstract

Context: The COVID-19 pandemic has amplified persistent and glaring health disparities resulting from structural inequities. To move forward, we must examine the existing forces driving policymaking and empower new advocates to magnify voices and create opportunities for people, programs, and policy committed to equity. The arts and artists powerfully impact equity and health, especially social health and wellbeing for individuals and communities. However, the arts sector is often overlooked in policy making and health equity efforts. An academic policy center and not-for-profit dance organization partnered to develop and lead an arts alliance for health equity. Among its first identified priorities is vaccine equity. Objective: Engage diverse leaders and organizations in the Arts Alliance for Health Equity to promote vaccine equity and develop arts advocates to drive public policy for health equity and wellbeing. Study Design: Community-based participatory research – long standing partners academic-community partners conceptualized and successfully received funding to initiate an arts alliance for health equity. Setting: Metro area in Colorado, USA. Population studied: The Arts Alliance for Health Equity includes arts and cultural organizations, public health and policy organizations, policy makers, key decision makers; vaccine equity efforts are focused on communities of color and other traditionally underserved. communities. Outcome Measures: Actions to promote vaccine equity in local communities. Outcomes to be reported: Vaccination clinics at community organizations have occurred through partnership with the state public health department and local chapter of the NAACP. Over 80 artists and community members were vaccinated at one clinic, appreciating the opportunity to receive the vaccines in a familiar space with trusted partners: “Of all the rooms, in all the buildings in my sweet old gritty downtown, there is something special about being in this room for my first COVID vaccine shot. I have learned Capoeira in this room, taught in this room, shed blood and sweat and many tears on this floor, practiced for many hours.” A public service announcement highlighting returning to the theater is also underway. The value of organizations serving as community hubs for health initiatives and lessons learned for successful collaborations will also be shared.
