GIS Texts

GIS and Public Health

Melnick, AL. Introduction to Geographic Information Systems in Public Health. Aspen Publications, Gaithersburg, MD. 2002

Cromley EK, McLafferty S. GIS and public health. New York: Guilford Press, 2002.

Waller LA and Gotway CA (eds). Applied Spatial Statistics for Public Health Data. New York: John Wiley & Sons, Inc, 2004.

Spatial Epidemiology

These texts are a good resource, but the first two can be quite technical. The Mitchell book is more basic, but only covers a limited number of topics.

Waller LA, Gotway CA. Applied Spatial Statistics for Public Health Data. Hoboken: John Wiley & Sons, 2004.

Elliott P, Wakefield J, Best N, Briggs D. Spatial Epidemiology: Methods and Applications. New York: Oxford University Press, 2000.

Mitchell A. The ESRI Guide to GIS Analysis. Volume 2: Spatial Measurements & Statistics. Redlands: ESRI Press, 2005.

General Medical Geography Books

These texts provide a good overview of the field of medical geography, with plenty of public health case example, including international examples.

Gatrell A. Geographies of Health: An Introduction, Malden: Blackwell Publishing, 2002.

Meade M, Earickson R. Medical Geography, 2ed. New York: Guilford Press, 2000.

Griffith JR. Quantitative Techniques for Hospital Planning and Control. Lexington, Mass: Lexington Books; 1972.

GIS Books

The first resource is a tutorial, with sample data included to use with ArcGIS software. The Mitchell books are more general, and do not cover commands. Volume 2 is a nice basic review of spatial epi.

Mitchell A. The ESRI Guide to GIS Analysis. Volume 2: Spatial Measurements & Statistics. Redlands: ESRI Press, 2005.

The Built Environment

Lynch is a classic book on urban form, but not necessarily connected to public health. The Frumkin book is a nice overview of the perils of sprawl.
